'Tongyeong sacred tree'

The pressure given by the title was great.

A tree that dwells with a god!

​

While filming, I met the village chief and elders, and then I heard about the origin of the tree, the story of the tree’s ordeal, and the person involved. In the meantime, the sacred tree has become humans' tree for me. The sacred tree was also a library that stored human memories as well as a novel book that recorded all desires.

​

Due to disasters, development, and neglected management, the village lost its sacred tree. Some people looked lifeless and some even looked poor. I was shabby when I saw the scene.

​

The sacred tree was not alone in the lonely mountains, nor was it on an uninhabited island. It always stayed with humans. In the village that was left in ruins after humans left, even the sacred tree died. There were no sacred trees without humans.

​

I thought of the people who prayed by putting a straw rope on the sacred tree.

That simple heart was not only a sign of goodness, but it was also a sign of nature. It was the heart of the tree.

Maybe it seemed like I knew.

​

Humans created sacred trees, and the sacred trees were now weaving humans together again.

I slipped a piece of my heart into it with a camera.

‘통영신목’

제목이 주는 부담감은 컸다. 신이 깃든 나무라니!

​

촬영하며 동네 이장님과 마을 어르신을 만나 나무의 유래를 듣고, 나무의 수난사와 본인과 얽힌 이야기를 들으며 어느새 신목은 내게 인간의 나무 ‘인목’이 되었다. 신목은 인간의 기억을 간직한 기억의 도서관이기도 했고, 모든 욕망을 기록한 소설책이기도 했다.

재해로, 개발로, 그리고 관리 소홀로 인해 신목이 사라진 마을은 빛을 잃었다.

사람들은 생기마저 없어 보였고, 심지어 가난해 보였다.

그 현장을 본 나 역시 초라하였다.

​

신목은 저 홀로 산속 외딴곳에 있지 않았고, 무인도에 있지도 않았다.

항상 인간의 곁에 머물렀다. 인간이 떠나고 폐허가 된 마을은 신목도 죽어갔다.

인간 없이 신목도 없었다.

​

신목에 금줄을 치고 기원하는 사람들을 생각했다.

그 소박한 마음이 바로 선함이었고, 또한 자연이었다. 바로 나무의 마음이었다.

어쩌면 알 것도 같았다.

​

인간이 신목을 만들었고, 그 신목이 이제 다시 인간을 엮고 있었다.

거기에 사진기로 내 마음 하나 슬쩍 끼워 넣었다.
